Consultation fees are at the rate prescribed by the Australian Medical Association (AMA). Part of this AMA prescribed fee will be covered by Medicare. Your health fund does not contribute to this.
These are treated differently to consultation fees. Before your surgery is finally booked you will be given a full breakdown of all the costs and charges involved. The full cost of your surgery may include out-of-pocket expenses. However, every health insurance fund is different in how it reimburses you for surgery. You will need to check with your health insurance fund to find out how much it will, or will not, contribute towards the final cost of your surgical procedure.
Some health insurance funds provide much better contributions or rebates to the costs of your surgical procedure than others. Under current Australian Law you are able to change your health insurance fund, with absolutely no loss of cover, at any time you choose. Indeed, when you do change health insurance funds you may be eligible for a refund of any unused premiums that you have already paid to that insurance company. In order to receive a refund you must remain at the same level of cover and not upgrade to a higher level of cover.
Providing there is no gap in your coverage when you do move from one company to another, then the coverage from the new health insurance fund will begin immediately. You can, therefore, change health insurance companies even after you have decided to go ahead with the surgical procedure. This potentially offers you the opportunity to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.
